Where is Cyprus?

Cyprus is located in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, east of Greece and north of Egypt. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and is strategically important in the region, connecting three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa.

Cyprus is a special case in modern political and geographical history, with a complex division as follows:

Southern Cyprus:

The Greek Cypriots control the southern region. This is the area administered by the Republic of Cyprus, established in 1960 after gaining independence from Britain.

The Republic of Cyprus has been a member state of the European Union (EU) since 2004 and is recognized by most countries in the world.

Northern Cyprus:

The northern part of the island has been occupied by Türkiye since 1974 following a coup aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece, which led to Turkish military intervention.

The area was declared the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 1983 but is only recognised by Türkiye, while the rest of the world considers it to be part of the Republic of Cyprus.

Green Line:

The United Nations administers a buffer zone, known as the Green Line, which separates the northern and southern parts of the island.

The Green Line is seen as a peace zone, with the mandate to maintain stability and prevent conflict between the two communities.

The southern Republic of Cyprus has strong economic and political development, supported by its EU membership.
Northern Cyprus is internationally isolated and heavily dependent on economic and political aid from Türkiye.
Unification efforts: There have been many international negotiations aimed at unifying Cyprus, but the talks have often failed due to divergent interests between the two sides and the complexity of the sovereignty issue.

Cyprus remains one of the major geopolitical flashpoints in the Mediterranean.
