During the late twenties, Arthur Rubinstein heard Vladimir Horowitz play for the first time. This is what Rubinstein wrote in his memoirs about that recital and Horowitz performance of the Liszt- Busoni Paganini Etudes "I shall never forget the two Paganini-: Liszt etudes, the E flat and E major ones. There was more than sheer brilliance and technique; there was an easy elegance-the magic that defies description." I doubt that Rubinstein realized that he was listening to the original 1838 version of the" E major one." The original composition has too many variants to list here .A very basic analysis is that the B section in C major has additional material and the C section, "un poco animate," is extended and is far more effective than the later 1853-54 revision, which is probably why Horowits chose to play it. For wherever reason, this recording was not released during the pianist's life time.
