FREEDOM TO FEAR: Our West Africa Journey Takes Another Scary Turn

Leaving Conakry after THREE WEEKS of breakdowns! 😩 Our West Africa overlanding adventure continues (barely!) as we finally escape Guinea and head towards Sierra Leone. Monsoon season is looming, and we're seriously behind schedule.

The relief of leaving Conakry was HUGE... but then, that dreaded sound returned. 😫 Our trusty Sprinter van is making noises again, and the fear of being stranded in rural Africa is very real.

With darkness closing in fast, we desperately searched for a place to stop for the night. A small, rough dirt track led us down a STEEP creek bed (our hearts were in our mouths!), but the van powered through! On the other side, a beautiful flat spot nestled amongst the trees beside a river seemed like a blessing.

But in West Africa, things aren't always straightforward. We soon learned we needed permission from the local village chief to camp here overnight. With the last light fading, Curt bravely ventured out with a local guide to meet the chief. Would he grant these weary travelers a place to rest? And what will we do about this persistent mechanical problem? Getting stranded AGAIN is simply not an option!
