Tony nominee David Hyde Pierce performed "Penny in My Pocket" for the performance Hello, Dolly! at the 2017 Tony Awards.
Bette Midler was also a Tony nominee but did not perform during The Tony Awards.
Jerry Zaks’ revival of the musical classic features a score by Jerry Herman. The playwright is Michael Stewart. Warren Carlyle choreographs the show, paying tribute to the work of the original production's director-choreographer Gower Champion. It earned 10 Tony nominations.
Midler, who plays matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, did not perform at the awards show, and instead presented an award. Producers of the musical initially aimed to have Midler perform remotely from the show's Shubert Theatre, but the awards show's producers opted against that preference.
