Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears) is the first Marathi film to premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category, and the first Indian film to win a Grand Jury Prize at the festival. In this film about grief, loss, love and identity, filmmaker Rohan Parashuram Kanawade explores a very personal story with utmost warmth and tenderness.
In this interview, I talk to Rohan about the journey that made him create Sabar Bonda, the issue of diversity in Indian queer stories, the process of translating one's own lived experiences on screen, and how the mainstream Indian audience perceives independent cinema today.
