Self-building our own home!

It’s been years in the making!

We knew we wanted a high performance home built with lots of customized details, but we couldn’t afford a custom home builder.

We ultimately decided to manage the build ourselves. Alex has been the driving force behind the house design and build. He spent over 600 hours designing our initial plans. This doesn’t include the countless hours of reading and learning he did outside of physically working in the design software.

At the start of the project, we thought we were going to hire out more. But as we started performing the trades ourselves, we realized it was enjoyable both to learn and practice all the various types of work. Plus it saved us money!

Throughout the entire process we’ve made connections with professionals and reached out when we had questions.

It’s been a journey, and there’s still a long ways to go.. but now we almost don’t want it to end!

Good thing we designed it for an addition 😜

If you have a dream, make a plan, put in the work, never give up, and find a few mentors along the way.. there’s not much you can’t achieve!

ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.
