Galatta Kalyanam (1968) Directed by C. V. Rajendran and written by Chitralaya Gopu (adapted from his own stage play), Galatta Kalyanam stars the legendary Sivaji Ganesan and Jayalalithaa in a delightful tale of love, family, and chaotic wedding plans. Known for its sharp situational comedy, memorable performances, and catchy music, this film remains a gem of Tamil cinema.
One of its iconic songs, "Engal Kalyanam", was shot at a very special location the Indian International Trade and Industries Fair held in 1968. Organized by the All India Manufacturers’ Organisation, the fair took place in Naduvinkarai, a small village on the north bank of the Cooum River, which would soon evolve into what we now know as Anna Nagar.
At the heart of the fair stood the 135-foot Visvesvaraya Tower, inspired by parabolic arches a striking symbol of modernity. The fair was a groundbreaking moment in South India’s urban and industrial growth, showcasing cutting-edge architecture and international collaboration with countries like USSR, Poland, and Yugoslavia.
This rare intersection of cinema and city history makes Galatta Kalyanam more than just a film it's a snapshot of Chennai's transformation from village to metropolis.
