Mary Bright, the Derbyshire heiress, was just seventeen when she married Charles Watson-Wentworth, the young Second Marquess of Rockingham, one of the richest and most powerful men in 18th Century Britain, and twice to be Prime Minister.
She stepped into an extraordinary life as Whig political influencer and secretary to her husband; manager of the vast Wentworth Woodhouse estate and other households; musician and gifted singer; amateur physician; and, in later years, a pioneer botanist and founder member of the Linnaean Society. And, of course, a dedicated follower of fashion! The breath-taking silver tissue mantua she wore to the glittering court of King George III and Queen Charlotte is now restored to its former glory.
