Before the fall of Morgoth, before even the forging of the One Ring, there were the Balrogs — spirits of fire and shadow, the Dread Servants of the first Dark Lord. Once radiant Maiar, of the same order as Gandalf and Sauron, these beings were corrupted into instruments of terror and flame. But what does it mean to be a ‘Demon of Power’? How did they fall — and what was their true nature within Tolkien’s legendarium?

In this fourth episode of The Red Book Podcast, I explore the origins and transformation of the Balrogs, tracing their descent from the Music of the Ainur to the fiery depths of Angband. Through Tolkien’s revisions and metaphysical notes, we uncover what these beings reveal about the corruption of creation and the peril of aligning one’s will to another’s discord.
