The Church is named after the New Testament friend of Jesus whom he rose from the dead which is recounted in the Gospel of St John 11:41-44 that is Lazarus of Bethany.
Naturally, the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus aroused the Jews and "the High Priests planned to put Lazarus to death" (John XII 9-11), as he constituted living evidence of the miracle.
Therefore the banished saint fled to the island of Cyprus where he encountered the apostles Paul and Barnabas and was ordained as the first Bishop of Citium (Present day Larnaca) as the first Bishop of Cyprus.
He is said to have lived for thirty more years and on his death was buried there for the second and last time.
