Mir Dast was born in Maidan, the mountainous North-West Frontier Province of British India. His origins were of the Afridi tribe of Pathans, a Muslim. Mir Dast, VC, IOM, OBI was an Indian Muslim soldier and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces
