As Uganda heads into the 15 January 2026 general elections, the United Nations Human Rights Office has raised concern over what it describes as growing repression and intimidation targeting opposition politicians, journalists, and civil society actors. In a statement released ahead of the polls next week, the UN Human Rights Office said opposition figures, journalists, and civil society activists are reportedly facing increased pressure as the country prepares to vote. The report has, however, been dismissed by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Okello Oryem, who says it was based on social media reports that lack credibility.
