Crossing the Canadian Border with Your Dog (2025 Van Life Edition)
Traveling to Canada with your dog in your van? Here's exactly what you'll need to cross the border smoothly and legally.

✅ What You Need for Your Dog
Rabies Vaccination Certificate
Must be in English or French.
Signed by a licensed veterinarian.
Must include: your dog's breed, color, weight, vaccine manufacturer, serial number, date of vaccination, and duration of immunity.
The certificate must be valid at the time of crossing.
Healthy Appearance
Your dog must appear to be in good health at the time of entry.
A recent vet check-up isn’t required, but it’s smart to do before travel.
Microchip (Optional but Smart)
A microchip isn’t mandatory for personal travel, but it's a great safety measure in case your dog gets lost or there’s a question of ownership.

Border Inspection & Fee
Canadian Border Services will do a visual check of your dog and inspect the rabies certificate.
Expect to pay a small inspection fee: usually about $30 CAD plus tax for the first pet and $5 CAD for each additional one.

Dog Food Restrictions
You’re allowed to bring up to 20 kg (about 44 lbs) of commercially packaged dog food.

It must be in its original sealed packaging.
Declare it at the border—don’t try to hide it.

Special Situations
Puppies under 3 months old don't need a rabies certificate—just proof of age.
Some provinces have breed-specific restrictions (for example, on pit bulls), so check the rules for where you're headed.

Border agents may not always ask for documents, but you should always be prepared—they have the right to check.
