Rutgers University professors and students were at the center of an experimental art movement in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Allan Kaprow (1927-2006) was a philosopher, writer, and an art professor; he's widely considered the inventor of the "Happening," a participatory art event that foreshadowed today's performance art. An extensive interview with Kaprow is featured in this 1999 "State of the Arts" story, as well as artists Lucas Samaras and Robert Whitman, both students who went on to wide acclaim.
"Off Limits: Rutgers and the Avant Garde 1957 to 1963" was an exhibit at the Newark Museum, curated by Joseph Jacobs. The story features rare archival footage of Happenings as well as performances by George Brecht recreated during the Newark Museum exhibition. Produced by Amber Edwards.
