Replaced the caps, dialed it up on the variac, and this time, I didn't let the magic smoke out. Again, always change your caps.
The Maco 300 picked up at Dayton Hamvention for a song and dance on the bench. I peeped the big bad M-2057 tubes in it and the Ham was happy to get rid of it. Tubes test good, and everything in it is clean and underneath the components look mint. Other than me letting the smoke out with the bad caps, everything works on this including the preamp.
Does around 300 dead key and stands still with swing RMS and does around 600 peak swing on the giant wattmeter. Does about half that on low. Some people on here and Facebook say they get 900 or a KW out of these. Well, if you do, it won't be for long. Maco called these a 300 for a reason. Many believe, including me, that the Maco 300 is one of the stoutest small to mid size 'CB' amp made. It's a real workhorse and will last a long time if ran right. However, like anything else, won't last long if not ran right and I'm talking about the people who drive these with 30 watts and get 900 out. These amps were made for 3 or 4 watts drive.
