The Erbil subdialect, commonly known as Hewlêrî, is spoken mostly throughout the Erbil governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

This subdialect, colloquial and casual in nature, is used from Rawanduz in the north down to Qeraj and Kandenawa in the southern plains of the Erbil governorate.

Named after the city of Erbil itself, Hewlêrî reflects the diverse nature of the city, home to a mix of Kurds, Turkmen, Assyrians, Arabs and Armenians.

Moreover, many Kurds in Erbil hold tribal affiliations, with linguistic backgrounds either in Sorani or Kurmanji Kurdish.

This blend of linguistic influences, paired with the city’s ethnic diversity, gives Hewlêrî a unique character enriched by each of these contributing factors.

Among the closest subdialects to Hewlêrî are those spoken in nearby regions and cities such as Ranya, Qaladiza and Mukriyan, with the latter being in Iranian Kurdistan.
