DIY video on how to make a coronavirus fluid resistant Type IIR face mask with nose forming metal bar at home using sewing machine and recycled home materials.
This mask replicates a Type IIR fluid resistant masks, it has a fluid resistant centre layer in the centre. For this mask we have used an old shower curtain to provide resistance to splashes. The cotton is an old pillow case made of heavy non stretch cotton. It’s important that you don’t use stretchy cotton as when it stretches it is too thin and doesn’t provide a barrier.
At the top there is a length of garden wire, this is essential as the CDC only recommends masks which can be formed to create a tight seal over the nose. An unfolded paperclip could also be used.
2 or 3 folds creates pleats and allows the mask to be pulled under the chin covering the nose and mouth mucosa sufficiently.
As with all DIY projects, commercially available products are always better. Respirators such as N95 or FFP3 dust masks are the best option, followed by commercial Type IIR surgical masks. Later in the CDC recommendations they recommend a bandana, this DIY mask would sit somewhere around that level but a bit easier to wear.
Masks should be washed at a sufficient heat to destroy the virus after each use and replaced if damaged.
Many thanks for watching! Stay safe my friends!
