Francis Ford Coppola, who was born in Detroit on the 7th of April 1939, started out aiming for a theatre career that he pursued at Hofstra University, before graduating at UCLA in filmmaking. It is in the wings in theatre that he develops a sense of epic human tragedy that you can enjoy in his filmography (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, to name just a few). This is also where he developed his craft in directing actors.
