During this migratory season, a pair of Baillon's Crakes landed in a desolate pond in Singapore. They turned out to be individuals who defied their species' typical behaviour.
Known to be secretive by nature, this relatively brave pair came out foraging in the open waters of the pond, and remained partially open at the soggy pond edges among clusters of reeds & thin bushes.
This atypical behaviour was observed in this video, while 7:04 onwards shows its more commonly manifested behaviour, skulking among vegetation.
It was indeed a pleasant surprise to encounter this naturally wary species out in the open.
Baillon's Crakes' breeding grounds cover eastern Europe & northern Asia. There are also scattered populations in Africa & Australia.
They migrate to South Asia in winter.
Baillon's Crake is a rare migrant to Singapore.
