This piece, composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau in his Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de Clavecin of 1728, is a classic example of the character pieces, for lack of a better description, which were steadily becoming the tradition of choice in 18th-century French harpsichord music. These pieces were quite at odds with the more fixed and relatively predictable suites of stylized dances perfected by the end of the 17th century, and are considerably more varied than the latter. La poule, with its staccato melodies and abrupt, stop-and-go phrasing, easily brings to mind the image of a chicken pecking and fluttering its way jerkily through a farmyard. The harpsichord, with its sharp attack and quick, light action, represents all-too-well the nervous nature of this very agitated bird.
Performed on my double-manual harpsichord after the 1624 instrument by Ruckers, driven by Hauptwerk. Enjoy!
