This isn't the Sri Lanka I'm looking for

Today I land in Colombo, Sri Lanka, not having researched anything so it takes some working out to know where I’m going. After asking some people at the airport where things are, I walk outside the terminal boundary and look for a tuk tuk driver. Shortly after stepping out onto the kerb a man by the name of George approaches me and we negotiate a price for the thirty minute drive to my accommodation near Negombo beach.

I then give you a quick room tour where I’m staying which is a lovely, bright and airy, high ceilinged place with A/C, hot water, small balcony, wifi, and a mirror I really like. :)

Then it’s a walk to the beach which I can’t find. I stop and talk to a shop owner, then a man who wants to sell me a tuk tuk tour, before asking a local where the darn beach is. This local man asks two other gentlemen walking on the other side of the road and I’m chaperoned into a building which feels a bit dodgy.

This building is a hotel which opens up onto Negombo beach and I realize I’ve been walking parallel to it the whole time.

Along the beach we see some nice beach-side hotels, a lovely clean spread of sand, and a few young people having a couple of beers enjoying the afternoon.

It’s then time for lunch at a tourist restaurant where I meet a young German couple as well as a man from Taiwan who is a dentist and volunteers his time in various countries. He recently checked the teeth of forty monks in Nepal. I had a rice curry and a local beer for lunch.

Today is just a quick scattered walk around as I get my bearings but I already understand this part of Sri Lanka is what I'd like to avoid as it's really just a typical tourist centre with very little authenticity or substance to it.
