On this breezy and cloudy Tuesday afternoon a friend of mine and I headed over to Prospect Ave in Piscataway because we had gotten word that Q418 was on the move with one of just 4 active Ex-Conrail CSX SD80MAC's leading. Actually the previous night I heard that Q417 had come down the CSX Riverline with a SD80MAC trailing and thats when I knew that the power would come back north the next day on Q418.
While I was home my friend called me up and said he was heading over to Prospect Ave hoping to catch it so I hooked up with him and we headed out together. Another friend of our's was down in West Trenton at the same time and he managed to get Q418 there. He said that Q418 was now heading our way. With that we waited patiently and soon enough we heard Q418 over the radio entering North Jersey territory. After hearing that transmission we heard the distinctive noise's of a Leslie RS3L and EMD 20-710G3B-ES prime mover and it was Q418. It came through leading a Boxcar logo ES44AH and YN3 SD40-2 that was added on in Woodburne, PA. This was originally one of 30 SD80MAC's that were ever built by EMD and sold off to Conrail in the early 1990's and than split by Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation in the coming years.
