One thing was clear: manual planning was quickly reaching its limits here. Not only was it time-consuming and prone to errors, but it also depended heavily on individuals, which made the process even more difficult.

In view of this, Ortlieb decided to automate its production planning with the help of an APS system (Advanced Planning and Scheduling system). This has enabled them to reduce their planning effort by more than fivefold: What used to take 4 employees 16 hours to complete can now be done by 1 employee in just 3 hours. The increased production capacity, without additional machines or shifts, also led to improved operation with optimal scheduling. In addition, automated production planning gives Ortlieb greater flexibility to respond to any fluctuations in demand.
