Judge permanently blocks Ohio social media consent law

A federal judge granted a permanent injunction Wednesday to block an Ohio law that would require children under 16 to get parental consent to use social media apps.

U.S. District Court Judge Algenon Marbley's decision to grant a permanent injunction prevents authorities from enforcing the Parental Notification by Social Media Operators Act. This news comes after a lawsuit filed earlier this year by NetChoice winded its way through court.

NetChoice is a trade group representing TikTok, Snapchat, Meta and other major tech companies. The group claimed the law as overly broad, vague and an unconstitutional impediment to free speech.

The law originally was set to take effect Jan. 15 and is similar to ones enacted in other states — including in California and Arkansas, where NetChoice has won lawsuits. The court issued a temporary restraining order in January and extended the block again a month later.
