New Hampshire is one of the best places to Nordic ski in the country, especially for backcountry enthusiasts. Whether your a beginner xc skier or full on expert, there's countless well maintained shelters, lean-to, or cabins as well as incredibly beautiful trails and wilderness leading to them, to enjoy. This area in the Three Ponds Wilderness, a lesser travelled area of the White Mountain National Forest, is a place Nikki and I have never explored in winter. It captures that remote feeling while also transporting you to that emotion very quickly from the start. Ten minutes into the Mt. Kineo trail and you get a sense that it's just you, the conifers and hardwoods, and the few animals that decide to embrace winter rather than hibernate. Crossing cascade waterfalls that are frozen in time, open wetland areas with panoramic views and ending at a remote lean-to overlooking the Middle Pond of the Three Ponds. I really can't say enough good things about the capability of our Fischer S-Bound 112 skis and Rotefella BC Magnum bindings. They continue to take us to such incredible places in the White Mountain National Forest and beyond. Fuel up with an incredible pre adventure veggie burrito at the gas station cafe in the town of Rumney, owned by the Common Man Restaurant. A prominent staple in the New Hampshire culture. Don't skip it if you're in the area.
This might have been our favorite backcountry ski tour to date.
