Latrunculi (a.k.a. Ludus Latrunculorum) is an ancient game played in the Roman Empire. Available in both travel size https://newventuregames.com/products/... and full-size https://newventuregames.com/products/... it's a great way to explore the activities of ancient Rome.
The actual rules are lost to history, but modern game historians have developed rules based on archeological evidence and vague literary references. The NewVenture "Peg Pastimes" version offers two possible rule sets in one package. The first is a placement-and-capture version (similar to Seega and others), and the second version pits two armies on the battlefield with more of a chess-like experience.
