Explore the beauty of 't Waliën Estate, a vast forested area that was once dominated by heathland before being transformed into production forests during the industrial era. The estate features a mix of Douglas, Japanese Larch, Scots Pine, and Spruce, with ancient beech avenues standing out in the western part of the estate. One of the oldest beech avenues is now closed to the public due to the risk of falling branches.
In the mid-19th century, coniferous trees were planted in the area as a source of income, providing support timber for local mines. Today, this forest is a unique blend of history and natural beauty, with an abundance of wildlife, including insects, and even a roe deer that crossed my path three times during the walk.
This peaceful summer walk through the woods offers not only scenic views but a glimpse into the historical transformation of the land.
