How Bob Makes Color Glow!
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
I learned about making color glow from studying Rembrandt paintings. His dark, colorless portraits grabbed my attention when I noticed how he made jewelry glow - or the plume on a hat glow - or even his still life paintings… they all glowed. It was a simple, but effective painting technique, but exaggerating the one hot focal spot and THEN mixing the same focal color into the back ground color. The resulting effect appears as a glow - a halo.
It’s another way to draw the viewers’ attention towards the one focal point - a strong contrast and one color area that glows and reflects off of each other.
The abstract painting behind me on the wall exaggerates the luminous pink opera color (the focal point) glowing over the blue back ground. This effect happened because I painted a violet color around the focal point.
Having established that, now let’s do the same technique, using color. Practice painting a simple, single subject - such as a fruit or vegetable.
Let’s paint a pear! My short painting demo shows how I paint two pears that glow! So, a yellow pear on a blue back ground will glow - a green hazy effect.
A red apple on a yellow back ground might glow as orange. You get the idea! One more observation… the color of a shadow may be the complementary color of the light source. Example: Sunlight shining on a snowy forest… the shadows will be bluish/purple. Think of Wayne Thiebaud’s lush paintings and observe his shadow choices.
Your next studio practice assignment is to add colorful “glows” to your almost completed paintings.
Paint your glow!
