What is Emotional Resilience and what is Psychological Resilience? Is there a difference when it comes to mental health strategies for teenagers and young people
Curious about the difference between emotional resilience and psychological resilience? In this video, we break down these closely related—but distinct—concepts and explain why they're so important for wellbeing in teenagers.
Emotional resilience refers to your ability to manage and recover from emotional challenges like stress, sadness, anger, or disappointment. It centres on regulating emotions, maintaining emotional balance, and bouncing back from emotionally difficult situations. Emotional resilience is strongly connected to emotional intelligence, drawing on skills such as self-awareness, empathy, and healthy emotional regulation.
Psychological resilience is a broader term. It describes your overall capacity to adapt and recover from adversity, trauma, or significant stress. This includes emotional resilience but goes further, covering cognitive and behavioural skills—like problem-solving, goal setting, tapping into internal resources, recognising your strengths, and maintaining a hopeful, positive outlook even during tough times.
In short, emotional resilience focuses on managing emotions, while psychological resilience covers the full spectrum of mental and emotional coping mechanisms. Emotional resilience is a core ingredient of psychological resilience.
Many of the strategies that help young people build resilience also support overall wellbeing. However, true resilience is only activated in response to adversity or challenge—when the skills you’ve built are put into practice. Some young people are naturally resilient, or benefit from strong role models. Many more benefit from explicit teaching and practice of resilience-building strategies to develop their confidence and internal resources.
