Revolution (also known as (R)evolution or Evolution for a while) is an indoor steel roller coaster in the Belgian amusement park Bobbejaanland. Since 2016, the front half of the train has been used for another attraction, Mount Mara, a roller coaster ride with virtual reality goggles that simulates a quad bike ride on an active volcano. The back half of the train is still Revolution. However, Mount Mara has been closed since the corona outbreak.
Revolution was built by the Dutch attraction builder Vekoma. The roller coaster is of the Illusion model, of which only two copies were built. Chaos is the other and was located at the Opryland amusement park, but it was demolished in 1997. The hallmark of this model, the Vekoma Illusion, is the very long roller coaster train: 40 carriages at Chaos, and 30 at Revolution. After the destruction of Chaos, it has not been rebuilt, so Revolution has the longest roller coaster train in the world (Revolution's train is 56 meters long).
The train rides up in the middle of the hall (the inner ring) over a helix formed of semicircles with a wheel lift in it. Meanwhile, on the parabolic shaped screen, attached to the ceiling of the hall, a projection is played, accompanied by music and light effects. Once the roller coaster train is at the top, it will drive down again in a corridor next to the inner ring (the outer ring).
The attraction runs half like Mount Mara and half like Revolution. In the front half of the train, visitors wear virtual reality glasses and adapted music is used. The old effects, except for the music, remain visible in the rear part of the train. Mount Mara was introduced in 2016 as an alternative to Revolution but was never able to completely replace it.
The attraction was officially opened on Thursday 15 June 1989 by former Prime Minister Leo Tindemans, although the roller coaster was already open to the public in May.
At the opening, as originally intended with the Illusion roller coaster, there were six projections: two in the inner ring and four in the outer ring. These in the inner ring showed two synchronized films, and the smaller screens in the outer ring showed projections of fire and breaking glass, among other things.
