"Included with this issue of Inuktitut is a recording of songs, oral histories and throat singing by Cape Dorset people. It is a sample from tapes produced there in the summer of 1977 when a project was mounted by The West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative Limited to produce. for the first time. professional quality recordings of Inuit performances.
The recording project was based largely on the talents of Etulu Etidlooie, a songwriter/performer who was also involved in its organization. An existing building in the community was sound proofed and used as a studio where Etidlooie recorded 38 songs which, it is hoped. will be issued as a commercial. long playing record.
Others who were taped included Pitseolak Ashoona, who tells stories and sings songs associated with her art; Pudlo Pudlat who tells his life story, and Napachie Tunu and Haunak Mikigak who perform throat songs.
The record included with this issue contains on one side songs composed and performed by Etulu Etidlooie, and on the other stories told by his father, Etidlooie Etidlooie."
