In this video, I take you on a biking journey through Sudbury, Ontario, during the spring season. Despite the warmer weather, the city struggles to clear snow off sidewalks and bike lanes, leaving many areas buried under snowbanks. As someone with a disability, I rely on studded tires to navigate the icy paths, and thanks to the AODA laws, I'm able to bike on the sidewalk when necessary.
On my way home from an appointment downtown, I decided to bike instead of driving, enjoying the nice day. But things quickly took a turn when I was almost struck by a car at an intersection. A driver decided to pull into the crossing as I was already in it, forcing me to brake abruptly. As I continued my ride home, I found that the bike lanes were completely covered in snow, leaving only a few inches of usable space. I tried to use the bike lane but ended up riding on the sidewalk instead for safety and convenience.
Join me as I navigate these challenges, and let's discuss how cities can improve biking infrastructure, especially for those with disabilities.
