TL;DW throw back the bad creatures through the portal, turn them into skeletons in the prison, or use their bodies for vampires. Generally it would be more effective to skellify minions in the prison as it takes 10 bodies for 1 vampire.
The creatures and heroes you get all depend on the map and what's allowed to come through the portal.
