Vatican begins Easter preparations as pope recovers

The Vatican began Holy Week with Pope Francis recovering and cardinals leading key services. At 88, he missed Holy Thursday Mass but reportedly planned to visit a Rome prison, honouring his tradition of commemorating Christ’s Last Supper with the less fortunate. Holy week and Easter mark an intense period of prayer and reflection, and a time when the pope would be expected to be front and centre of celebrations, but this year was different.
