A SELECTION OF UK CLEARWING MOTHS (SESIIDAE) 2022

A video record of a selection of UK species observed during the 2022 season. The males of these elusive moths were all attracted using synthetic pheromone lures. Note that some of the numerous Red-belted Clearwing larval mines in an old apple tree have been attacked by insectivorous birds and there were also a lot of parasitic wasps about. No pupal exuviae were observed protruding from the tree this year. A black and red Burnet Moth is attracted to the lure deployed to attract the Six-belted Clearwing. It was good to see the Sallow Clearwing again in reasonable numbers and we will now have to wait unit 2024 to see the adults again. The other species observed and recorded in this video seemed to be less numerous than the previous year. The Hornet Moth captured in the pheromone trap can be heard buzzing about. Note the Lunar Hornet Moth cowering out of the hot sunshine in the shade of the rotary dryer cover.
