Iceland Walking Tour - Golden Circle [4K]

This is a sightseeing tour of the Golden Circle in Iceland. The Golden Circle consists of Iceland’s three most popular tourist attractions: Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir national park. These places are about an hour and a half drive from Reykjavik city and are close enough for you to be able to do the full tour in 5 hours by car. The Golden Circle derives its name from Gullfoss Waterfall, which means Golden waterfall in Icelandic. Highlights of the tour:
00:00 - We start the tour in Þingvellir. Heads up for the squeamish, many places in Þingvellir were used for executing people in the past. We have just passed Langistígur (the Walk of Death), where prisoners took their last steps down into the canyon you are now looking at, which is called Stekkjargjá canyon. Some people were hanged here in the canyon, others decapitated.

00:40 - You can see how much it has snow recently. I’m standing about 2 meters above the path.
04:45 - This is Öxarárfoss waterfall. It is said some pioneers once dropped an axe into the frozen river, thus naming it “Axe river”. Öxarárfoss basically means “Axe river falls”.
08:10: Some parking space closeby. Take notice there is a fee of about 750kr.
14:40 - Underneath the ice here is a pool of water called Drekkingarhylur (drowning pool). Women used to be put in a bag and drowned here.
16:00 - The flag marks the location of Lögberg (Law Rock). This is believed by some to be the location where the Althing parliament gathered centuries ago.
18:35 - You are now in Almannagja canyon. This canyon marks the boundary of the Mid-Atlantic rift, which is the space between the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates. Big stuff we are talking about here.
22:33 - Looking over Þingvallavatn lake. The largest natural lake in Iceland.
30:23 - Þingvallakirkja church can be seen in the distance.
33:55 - Silfra fissure. It is filled with meltwater from Langjökull glacier. Many have gone diving or snorkeling here.
34:54 - Peningagjá, it is customary to throw a coin into the water for good luck or to make a wish, you can see the bottom of the water is filled with coins.
35:00 - You are now in Haukadalur valley, where we will be hiking to see the hot springs. There is no entrance fee.
38:28 - People are gathering around Strokkur geyser (the Churn). It erupts every 5 to 10 minutes. Lets wait for it.
42:06 - There it goes again.
43:55 - This spring is called Blesi (Blaze).
44:20 - Downhill you can see the Great Geysir. Supposedly it blasted water some 60-80 meters into the air but it has now been dormant for decades.
45:00 - Konungshver, the Royal Spring. Named after the Danish King Christian IX, who visited the Geysir area in 1874.
45:22 - We will now climb up mount Laugafell to take a view over the area.
56:08 - Finally to end the Golden circle tour we will see Gullfoss waterfall (Golden falls). The waterfall can be visited 24/7 free of charge.
58:31 - There it is. The waterfall consists of two drops, the first 11 meters and the second 21 meters. We will now take a look at it from different angles.
