Antique store, finding vintage Ocean Liner pieces SS United States, SS America, RMS Queen Mary. When visiting an antique or thrift store you never know what you will find. SS United States is a retired ocean liner built in 1950–51 for the United States Lines. The ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, retaining the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952 and still holds title today. Designed by American Naval Architect William Francis Gibbs.
The SS United States last journey was in 1969. The fast-growing air transportation industry made cross-Atlantic commercials unprofitable. In the early 1990s, the ship was sent to Turkey to have its entire interior walls stripped to its bare bones. Then in 1996, the ship arrived in Philadelphia to be a riverfront Casino / Hotel, but that plan failed.
If you would like to make a donation to help save the ship, go to https://www.savetheunitedstates.org/ to make a donation.
The SS United States Conservatory bought the ship. The owner of the group is the Great-Granddaughter of William Gibbs, the creator of this ship. They have been actively trying to find an owner to restore the ship. Many people are interested, just nothing has been finalized. They rely on donations to keep the ship docked which cost them 50,000 Us Dollars a month. Donations are keeping this ship afloat.
SS America was an ocean liner and cruise ship built in the United States in 1940, for the United States Lines and designed by the noted American naval architect William Francis Gibbs. It carried many names in the 54 years between its construction and its 1994 wreck: SS America (carrying this name three different times during its career); troop transport USS West Point and SS Australis, Italis, Noga, Alferdoss, and American Star. It served most notably in passenger service as America and the Greek-flagged Australis.
RMS Queen Mary is a retired British ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 Cunard White Star Line. After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. The ship serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum and a hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has accepted Queen Mary as part of the Historic Hotels of America.
