Join us at Y Mochyn Du pub in Cardiff, Wales as we explore Welsh Food for the first time sampling 4 different things to eat in this taste test. We started off with local Welsh beer and tea while ordering two different starters, a main dish and dessert to share between the two of us. The 4 different food items we tried were as follows:

1) Cawl (traditional Welsh soup)
2) Welsh Rarebit (melted cheese on sliced toast)
3) Faggots, gravy, mashed potatoes and peas
4) Rhubarb Crumble (sweet dessert with fruit)

All of it was delicious and to be honest the starters were the size of mains and we ended up feeling rather stuffed by the end of the meal. The portions at this pub are very generous.

After nearly a week in Wales (and only trying Welsh cakes!), it was time to dive into classic Welsh dishes and see what this hearty cuisine is all about. Sam kicks things off with a pint of Cwrw Y Mochyn Du, a local red ale with a bold craft beer flavor.

Audrey opts for a classic—tea! Sometimes you just need a comforting cuppa, especially after being under the weather.

🍲 Starters: Cawl & Welsh Rarebit
1. Cawl – National Dish of Wales

A warming bowl of Cawl: a cross between a soup and a stew.

Ingredients: typically lamb (sometimes beef), leeks, potatoes, carrots, onions, and seasonal veggies.

Served with homemade bread, a generous slab of Welsh cheese, and butter.

Welsh Faggots: Giant, hearty meatballs (minced lamb) in a rich onion gravy.

Served with mushy peas and creamy mashed potatoes—think of it as “Thanksgiving, the Welsh edition.”

Super satisfying, rich, and flavorful. The perfect meal for a cold, rainy day or after a long walk in the city.

The portions are generous—perfect for sharing!

🍰 Dessert: Rhubarb Crumble with Custard
Bartender’s pick: Rhubarb Crumble—the most traditional dessert you can order at a Welsh pub.

Served warm with a mountain of creamy, sweet custard.

The rhubarb is a little tart, which pairs perfectly with the sweet, smooth custard.

The whole feast—two drinks, two appetizers, a massive main, and a dessert to share—came to just £26 total (£13 per person).

Every dish was delicious, hearty, and left us stuffed and satisfied.
