Journalist/Author Dane Smith returns to our Access to Democracy program for an interview with Steve Francisco to discuss Minnesota's history of embracing isolationism and nationalism in the 1920s after World War I and how our state later came to embrace what Dane calls a "warm internationalism" in the years following World War II.
Dane explains why "America First" and the rise of anti-immigrant sentiments, along with fascism, racism, anti-semitism, and xenophobia, have deep historical roots and are not new to American politics. He also observes, that in the post-World War II period, Minnesota elected leaders from both major parties, such as Harold Stassen, Arne Carlson, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, and Don Fraser promoted Minnesota engaging with the world through trade, support for human rights, and offer safe haven to refugees and immigrants fleeing violence and persecution.
Dane also sounds an alarm about some current trends in our politics.
