6 STILL MISSING: Our Most INTENSE Search and Recovery Mission of 2024

After we found Karmen Neilson, (   • SOLVED: Karmen Neilson Found in River Afte...  ), we jumped right back on the waters of the Sacramento River, determined to bring closure to the families of six other missing persons still unaccounted for. Each case is a thread in a tapestry of mystery, heartbreak, and hope.

These are the people we are searching for and their stories.

*Julie Margaret Vessigault*
Missing Since: January 23, 2024
Vehicle: Tan 2005 Toyota Camry (GA plate SBJ4515)
Julie was last seen leaving her mother’s home in Elk Grove, CA. Known for her love of aviation, she was meticulous and dedicated to her work cleaning aircraft. Her sudden disappearance stunned her family and friends, especially as she left behind personal belongings and plans for the week. Could the Sacramento River hold the key to her fate?

*John Atkins*
Missing Since: October 1973
Vehicle: GMC Sprint
John disappeared after completing a deal near the Freeport Bridge. A dedicated father with a history of heart problems, it’s believed he may have suffered a medical emergency and veered off the road. His children, Scott and Marylin, have spent nearly five decades searching for answers, determined to find their father and finally bring him home.

*Norma Houghland and Sons, Thomas and Richard*
Missing Since: July 15, 1978
Vehicle: Gold or light blue 1965 Pontiac LeMans
Norma and her two young sons disappeared on a sweltering summer day. Known for taking drives to escape the heat, they were last seen heading out in their car. With no trace of the vehicle or family, speculation persists that they may have accidentally ended up in the river.

*Jose Guadalupe Cortez*
Missing Since: April 4, 1992
Vehicle: Red Toyota Celica
Jose was last seen leaving a local bar in Stockton, reportedly intoxicated. His friends assumed he would stay at a farm labor camp, but he never arrived. Jose’s case, like others, highlights the precariousness of life on the roads near the Sacramento River.

*Uriel Cantu*
Missing Since: November 26, 2006
Vehicle: Unknown
Uriel left home in Thornton, CA, heading toward Washington State to pick up a paycheck. He packed lightly, intending to return in two days. A mystery that spans decades, his family remains desperate for answers.

Using state-of-the-art sonar technology, AWP continues to scour the Sacramento River’s depths, focusing on areas with the highest likelihood of revealing clues. Steamboat Slough and other hotspots have already yielded numerous submerged vehicles, each carefully analyzed for connections to missing persons.

Today’s search concentrated on diving and marking vehicles identified in previous sonar scans. Among them was a red Toyota Celica, potentially tied to Jose Guadalupe Cortez, and an older vehicle buried under layers of silt, which might hold the answer to one of the remaining cases.

The Sacramento River presents unique challenges for recovery efforts. Strong currents, debris, and decades of sediment complicate the search, while the emotional weight of these cases drives the team to leave no stone unturned. As vehicles are recovered and cleared, each discovery brings us closer to uncovering the truth behind these disappearances.

This is what it takes to solve cold cases. This is what it means to never give up.
