A.N. Murthy Rao (1900–2003) was a prominent Kannada writer, philosopher, and rationalist, known for his critical thinking and influential works in Kannada literature. He is particularly remembered for his essays, short stories, and novels, which often dealt with themes like rationalism, secularism, and social reform. A distinctive aspect of Murthy Rao's work is his focus on questioning blind beliefs and superstitions, using his writing to encourage critical thinking.
One of his best-known works is Devaru (God), a collection of essays that critically examines religious beliefs and rituals. The book created significant debate at the time of its release, as it questioned established norms and encouraged a rationalist perspective. Murthy Rao also wrote essays and short stories that provided sharp social commentary, often challenging traditional ideas.
He was awarded the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for Kannada in 1971 for his essay collection Namma Maneyalli Itihasa ("History in Our House"). His works are valued not just for their literary quality but also for their courage in addressing sensitive social and religious issues. Murthy Rao’s contributions made him a respected figure in Kannada literature and an inspiring force for progressive thought in Karnataka.
