I've had this colony in the Golden Hive for a little over 2 years now, and the nuc is the result of a split on June 1. In this inspection, we found and marked a new queen in the nuc (not laying yet). The larger hive is doing great. Once again, we had a lot of conversation that might benefit new or future beekeepers.
The original colony was from a cut-out from a water-meter box. I think I've identified its parent colony as a truly feral colony, with at least 6 years of continued existence in the same location that I recently removed from a nearby barn. It was churning out swarms in that neighborhood -- I've taken 4 colonies from one yard and several others on the same nearby street. This suggests to me that they have strong mite-resistant traits -- and with reasonably docile behavior! My kind of bees!
I practice treatment-free beekeeping in Layens hives and I welcome your comments and questions.
