California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply criticised European leaders for what he called “complicity” and weakness toward U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats over Greenland and trade. Speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Newsom urged Europe to “stand tall, stand firm, and stand united,” accusing leaders of being soft in the face of Trump’s pressure tactics.
Trump has said the United States wants full control of Greenland for national security reasons and recently announced tariffs on European allies opposing the move. European governments say the tariff threat violates an existing trade agreement, with EU leaders set to discuss possible retaliation at an emergency summit in Brussels.
