From Louis Armstrong to Billie Holiday to Count Basie, the borough of Queens, New York has been home to some of the greatest legends of jazz. Others, including Dizzy Gillespie and Bix Beiderbecke, were buried in Queens. Yet, when the thriving centers of American jazz are brought under the spotlight, this New York City borough often takes a backseat to Harlem, New Orleans and Chicago. Why is that? And what brought so many jazz greats to the heart of Queens during the last century?
