The 1970 Plymouth GTX was a notable muscle car, often referred to as the "gentleman's muscle car" due to its more upscale trim compared to the Plymouth Road Runner. It received a minor styling refresh for 1970, featuring a new grille, rear taillights, and a "power bulge" hood, along with non-functional rear brake air scoops. The convertible body style was discontinued for this year. The GTX was part of Plymouth's "Rapid Transit System" performance car program.
Under the hood, the 1970 GTX came standard with the powerful 440 cubic-inch V8 engine ("Super Commando 440"), rated at 375 horsepower. Two optional engines were available: the 440 Six Barrel (440+6) with three two-barrel carburetors producing 390 horsepower and featuring a vacuum-operated Air Grabber hood scoop, and the legendary 426 Hemi V8, conservatively rated at 425 horsepower.
Performance-wise, the standard 440 V8 could achieve 0-60 mph in approximately 6.5 seconds, with a quarter-mile time in the mid-14-second range. The 426 Hemi was significantly quicker, reaching 60 mph in the low 5-second range and completing the quarter mile in the low 13-second range. Transmission options included a heavy-duty 4-speed manual or a TorqueFlite automatic.
Distinguishing features of the 1970 GTX included the Sport Satellite trim, lower side racing stripes with a "GTX" emblem, extra heavy-duty suspension components, a heavy-duty rear axle, and six-inch-wide wheels. Bucket seats and the "Power Bulge" hood were standard. The Air Grabber hood was standard on Hemi-equipped cars and optional on the 440+6 models.
Production numbers for the 1970 GTX were relatively low, with fewer than 8,000 units produced. This makes it a rarer and more desirable classic muscle car today, especially those equipped with the optional 440 Six Barrel or 426 Hemi engines. In summary, the 1970 Plymouth GTX offered a potent combination of power and upscale features, solidifying its place as a sought-after icon of the muscle car era.
