SUPERB A400 GOIN' THROUGH LOW LEVEL DUNMAIL RAISE LAKE DISTRICT, CUMBRIA • LFA17

It is always exciting to see the fighter jets flying through a Low Flying Area (LFA) but equally impressive is when the heavies come through. This RAF A400 based at RAF Brize Norton gracefully turns in to pass through Dunmail Raise in the Lake District. This area is known in the military as LFA17.

Entering operational service with the Royal Air Force in 2014, Atlas (Atlas C.1 A400M) provides tactical airlift and strategic oversize lift capabilities complementing those of the Hercules and C-17 fleets.

Atlas (Atlas C.1 A400M) has the ability to carry a 37-tonne payload over 2,000nm to established and remote civilian and military airfields, and short unprepared or semi-prepared strips. Capable of operating at altitudes up to 40,000ft, Atlas also offers impressive low-level capability.

It will accommodate as many as 116 fully-equipped troops; vehicles; helicopters, including a Chinook; mixed loads, including nine aircraft pallets and 54 passengers, or combinations of vehicles, pallets and personnel, up to a payload of 37 tonnes.

The UK is divided into 20 separate low flying areas, (LFA) and this area in Cumbria is number 17, so this becomes LFA17. The Mach Loop in LFA7. Of the 20 Low Flying Areas, there are also areas known as Tactical Training Areas (TTAs). These are in:
A Small area of mid Wales, part of northern Scotland and the borders area of southern Scotland and a small part of northern England.

TTAs are activated at specific times throughout each day and when a TTA is active, fixed wing aircraft can fly as low as 100 feet AGL. This is not the case with routine low flying training, which is conducted across the UK on a daily basis. Outside the published TTA times the airspace is classed as a normal low flying area where fixed wing aircraft routinely fly at a minimum height of 250 feet AGL and helicopters are authorised down to ground level.

LFA17 has lots of places to spot the aircraft, allowing you to find your own little spot. Some places can be challenging but rewarding too. Here is a little list of hotspots:
