Dear Ms President, call me optimistic
I know you haven’t been elected yet
But I will do my best to make it so
You say that you are for the people
I assume that that includes me too
If you’ll indulge me for a moment
I have a few things to discuss with you
We have a problem with violence
Our kids are no longer safe at school
How could we fail to protect them
Have greed and callousness become
the rule
We don’t fight wars but we sell weapons
We deny accountability
Then we deploy negotiators
Who shrug and sigh when all sides can’t
agree
We pay for war instead of healing
Our nation's wellness is a human right
Insurance companies are stealing
From the poor who can’t put up a fight
We have a problem with caring
Can’t we hold power and compassion
too
For our youth and our elders
And our world, we have so much to do
I know you’re busy
campaigning
But when you’re claiming that
you speak for me
Let’s find a way to move
forward
In a more functional
democracy
At this point we are tipping
On the balance of a whole new
way
We pass down to our children
A sacred promise of a better
day
Though we may have our
problems
Together we can work
them through
Thank you for listening
We have a lot that we
expect from you
