Tom Holland puts real fear and determination into a trainer watching his Pika-Chu slowly turn to the "dark" that is spreading rapidly around the world and destroying the bond between people and Pokémon forever. In this film, Emma Stone is Misty, a former water-type Pokémon trainer turned hard-boiled resistance fighter trying to stop the Shadow Fall phenomenon, and Robert Pattinson gives a chilling performance as Giovanni, the head of Team Rocket who found out how to use corrupted shadow energy to further his own doomsday plans. This adaptation will stand-out because it shows Pokémon with the emotional value they should have – these are not just battle weapons, they are your family members; therefore, seeing them become aggressive shadows because of the corruption is devastating.

The visuals of the movie are incredible with Pokémon being depicted in photorealism while capturing the charm of Pokémon in a way that visually depicts how frightening it can be to see Pokémon twisted into violent creatures by the shadow energy. The reason this is more than just another adaption is that it explores the theme of trauma and loss using a fantasy lens – Ash's journey becomes a metaphor for fighting to save your loved ones from something you don't understand while wondering if you are strong enough to make the sacrifices required for the greater good. With spectacular battles between creatures, blending horror with action, and with stakes that have never been higher where beloved Pokémon will face permanent consequences, and with a story that asks if some relationships are worth preserving even though darkness is consuming all you want to protect.
