New Compressor Installation Design Tech Transfer

Tech Transfer has the ability to design COMPLETE reciprocating compressor installations; including the compressor package. In this case, the scope of the design included the structural steel skid, pressure vessels , bottles, the piping system, along with the coolers and its supports. It even includes the concrete foundations.

All of the necessary analyses were included: structural, torsional, acoustical, plus piping stress and dynamics. We also analyzed the foundation stresses and vibration levels .

The complete design included P and IDs, plot plans and general arrangement drawings. Tech Transfer provided all fabrication drawings including bills of material along with welding details for each fabricated component. Pipe support and pipe clamp details were also provided. The technical design package created by Tech Transfer contained more than 200 detailed drawings, even down to the foundation bolt specification.

Notice from this “3-D Package Model”, the scrubbers and process gas piping are structurally separated from the main equipment skid. Separating the mechanical and acoustical energy sources significantly reduced vibration. We refer to this as our Hybrid Foundation concept.

The main skid supports the engine and compressor along with the utilities. The design and robust construction, of the red primered skid shown here, provides specific paths to direct the mechanical energy through the skid and into the foundation. The acoustic solution integrates the scrubbers, cylinders, bottles, process piping and coolers. Properly sized and strategically placed pipe supports ensure lower vibration of the piping system.

During the foundation design, we specified additional reinforcement steel to transmit and dissipate the energy from the unbalanced forces. The Additional steel significantly reduced cracking in the high stress areas of the main foundation. We performed a dynamic analysis of the skid and equipment to confirm natural frequencies and high vibration would not become a problem.

The side skids were shipped with the piping and valves completely assembled. The side skids were completely covered with galvanized steel grating, and stairs. The grated floor creates a safe working environment for operations and maintenance personnel.

The interconnecting piping between the equipment skid and the cooler, was assembled, tested and shipped on its own structural skid, further eliminating construction time and costs.
