The BBC presents a Royal Birthday Gala from The London Palladium.

A galaxy of glittering stars from the world of music, theatre, film and television gather together for a special celebration to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in a musical montage of the shows around in the early 1900s.

Sir John Gielgud delivers a welcome speech to the Queen Mother recalling the “gifts of the godmothers” followed by the song “tell me pretty maiden” . Sung and danced by a myriad of stars including Bonnie Langford and Lionel Blair.

From the 1899 musical comedy show Florodora. The composer of the show Leslie Stuart (1863 – 1928) had begun his career as a church organist in Manchester before moving on to write songs for musical shows in 1895, with Florodora becoming his first hit. The original London production had 455 performances and the New York production ran for 552 performances, with Tell Me Pretty Maiden becoming the most successful show tune of its time. The song is originally a sextet, sung by six men and six women, and the plot of the musical centres around a perfume business on the island of Florodora and the schemes and romantic entanglements that evolve there.

MEN: Tell me, pretty maiden, are
there any more at home like you?
LADIES: There are a few, kind sir,
but simple girls--and proper too!
MEN: Then tell me, pretty maiden,
what these very simple girlies do.
Then take a little walk
with me, and then I can
see what a most
particular girl should be.

The Queen and Princess Margaret recorded a special tape of favourite children's songs for the Queen Mother's 90th birthday in August 1990. Pianist Laurie Holloway was invited to Buckingham Palace by Princess Margaret to accompany herself and The Queen for the performance which was recorded on a cassette tape. The Royals recorded songs such as I Know Where The Flies Go In Winter Time, which were incredibly popular when the Queen and her sister were growing up.

The Queen was 64 at the time and Margaret 59.
